I wimped out on mine and kn...The socks are lovely. I wimped out on mine and knit a solid colour slip-stitch heel flap and continued with the solid colour for the heel turn. Back-and-forth stranded knitting/purling is not on my list of fun things to do! I envy you the opportunity of working with locally grown yarn for the mitts, especially with its historical significance; is it handspun? It seems like lots of knitters have had trouble with the heel flap and turn on these, and I'm sure I will as well. The mittens are gorgeous.
